Tournament Preview for the week of March 3rd to 9th, 2008, Dubai and Las Vegas

The European and South American swings, came to a conclusion with Sundays finals. All focus will shift to the hard courts, and the top players in the world. This weeks review takes the tour to United Arab Emirates, and the Dubai Open as well as Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Tennis Channel Open. Clearly, the Dubai tournament has a slightly more star power that Las Vegas, with 8 of the 10, players in the world competing in the Middle East.

We will start will Dubai and the return of Roger Federer! Where has Fed been? Well, sources say that the defending Dubai champ, has taken some time to regroup from his semi-final loss to Djokovic at the Aussie Open, and has been training diligently at his home in Dubai. It will be interesting to see how R-Fed plays this week since he has not had a competitive match since January 25, 2008. That is almost 5 weeks without playing a tour match, and the draw God’s were not friendly on Federer’s return. Roger, will play the 12th ranked player in the world Andy Murray (GBR) in the 1st round! With the draw having only 8 seeded players and a draw of 32, these type of 1st round match-up’s can occur. Roger, should look a bit rusty in this match, but I believe he will look to start his hard court campaign off on the right foot and take down Murray in 3 sets. Rafeal Nadal (ESP) is the 2nd seed, followed by Novak Djokovic(SRB) and David Ferrer as the 3rd and 4th seeds respectively. Nadal, could be sent home right off the bat as he faces tough German, Philipp Kohlschreiber in the 1st round. Kohlschreiber, surely has the game to give Nadal all sorts of problems. Djokovic, has a slighly easier draw, and will be looking to face, (Baby Fed) Richard Gasquet (FRA) in the quarter-finals. Other notable 1st round match ups to keep an eye out for are former number 1’s Andy Roddick versus Juan Carlos Ferrero (ESP) and the 4th seed David Ferrer versus former world number 2 Tommy Hass (GER). This should be a wonderful week of tennis, the players recieve alot of appearance fee money as well as gift’s for showing up, so hopefully there games will produce there best tennis as well. Here’s hoping for a Federer/Djokovic final!

The second preview of the week comes from the Texas holdem capital of the world, Las Vegas, Nevada. I remember, last year this tournament was so cold that players where wearing long sleeve shirts and the fans were sporting winter jackets. Clearly not Dubai weather, the draw is a reflection of that. Vegas, scored no top 10 players, with defending champ Lleyton Hewitt, long sleeves and all looking to defend his lone title of 2007. The top seed for the event is “Gonzo” Fernando Gonzalez (CHI) followed by Hewitt, Marcos Baghdatis (CYP), and Guillermo Canas (ARG) as your 3rd and 4th seeds. Hewitt, will be tested right out of the box with former world number 1 Marat Safin (RUS). This, could potentially be the popcorn match of the tournament, with these 2 former number 1’s having many great battles in the past. It will be interesting to see how “indoor king” Robin Soderling reacts to playing tennis outdoors for a change. His indoor game is lights out, and he needs to put some wins up under the sun. Perhaps, even tour title leader Michael Llodra (FRA) will aim for his 3rd trophies in 2008. This will be his best chance, because its not going to happen at the upcomin Indian Wells or Miami tournaments. Here’s hoping for the rejuvelated Robby Ginepri (USA) to face the big serving Russian, Marat Safin in the finals!

Please check back all week, as we will have updates, on this weeks matches. As well check out the links below for this weeks tournaments and feel free to leave a comment. Enjoy!

Federer out in the 1st round for the 1st time since 2004? What is going on? One has to wonder, if Roger is starting to get worried? Clearly, his fans are starting to wonder.

Nadal, Djokovic, and Roddick, all through in Dubai. If Nadal wins the title, he will only be 125 points behind Federer, for the number 1 spot. Hewitt, easily advances over Safin in Las Vegas. The Russian’s comeback and future, are surely in question.

i really think he is just tired. it is hard to keep that sort of focus and mental ability flexing for so long. i imagine we will see him regain form come the french/wimbledon swing.

Good review of match-ups, tourneys! You are very brave in your tips as anything can happen at this stage of the year! (It ’s what makes it so exciting). Fed is interesting now he is losing and Safin is….Safin!(genius and paradox In one man).

Federer’s loss and Nadal scraping through just show tough it is. (When Kohli believes it finally he will blow Nadal off his back! No disrespect to Rafa, he knows how to dodge bullets on a bad day!) Murray knows it, can he keep it rolling?

Indian Wells and Miami will really show how they all are going then the push through onto the dirt, Monte Carlo, Rome and Hamburg.

It is wide-open and isn’t that great?

Wow,
Murray just got out of jail against Verdasco! Breaker in 3rd! Fernando must be starting to believe a bit more on hardcourts, the screws are tightening and the boys are going for it. Tough battles ahead. It looked windy out there again today!
Great stuff!

Hewitt out in the 2nd round in Las Vegas, look for Hewitt, to take a hit in the rankings, as he won the tournanament last year. Im sure, Hewitt, will be questioning, what he has left at this point in his career when he’s going down in straight sets to Julien Benneteau 6-3, 7-5.

Roddick beats Nadal in straights sets in Dubai, plays Djockovic next. Feli Lopez and Davydenko will meet in the other semi final. Great win for Roddick, he has really impressed me this week. He is carrying his serve nicely throughout the tournament, Novak will be tough, winner of that match should take the title..

Roddick beats Djokovic in straight sets, moves on the final, in fantastic form, without losing a set. Feli Lopez beats Davydenko to reach the biggest final of his career. Its clear that this week in Dubai is a servers court. Roddick must be licking his chops at the prospect of having Lopez in the final. However, if Lopez serves lights out he has a chance. In Vegas Gonzalez loses to the young Russian Korolev after saving 11 match points! Ginepri continues his recent fine form, as he takes out 3rd seed Marcos Baghdatis in the 2nd round. Latvian teenager Ernests Gulbis, also reaches the quarters, with his power house game.

Huge serving from both in Dubai final!
A great contest even if it was a bit fast(wham-bam) for the purists.
Great win for A-Rod , see if he can keep form in U.S. tourneys.
Nothing resolved on Fed,Nadal and Djoker.
This is going to be a long run into U.S. Open and even then it may not be resolved.
Good to see some new finalists again.

Great and impressive week by Roddick, will be nice to see if he will be able to carry his form in Indian Wells and Miami.

Kevin Anderson, South African qualifer, into the finals in Las Vegas. He awaits the winner of Guillermo Canas/Sam Querrey who will contest the other semi-final.

I think this is a great win for Roddick and i think he was happy to see federer out. I hope Rodick can keep it up so there is another “monster” is the mix and maybe we can see a roddick federer finals like a few years ago. Also i think that Nadal is slowing down and that is why (i think) Rodick beet him. I think Nadal has to take it easy
